Levitation Magic Tricks - Impress People by Making Objects Float

Levitation magic tricks are hot in magic. They are a sure fire way to get reactions from your friends and colleagues.

What To Levitate

Stage magicians often levitate people. I don't want to go into too much detail about how they do this, but let me say this much: If you see somebody floating, one of two things are going on. They are either suspended by some sort of invisible wire (usually piano wire) or there is something supporting them that you don't see.

If they are suspended by wire, the background can help hide it from your eyes. In either case, hoops can be manipulated to look like they are passing around an object, while actually dodging the wires or supports.

Close-Up Levitations

If you're reading this article, you'll probably have more opportunity to perform what are known as close-up levitations than levitations on a stage. Close-up levitations include coins, cards, dollar bills, cigarettes, and more.

How They're Done

Most often, close-up levitations are performed with the aid of what magicians call "invisible thread." Of course, it isn't really invisible, it's just really, really thin. In fact, when you first buy it, it's bundled into about forty strands.

When you separate one of those strands, you have a piece of "invisible" thread. Many people purchase this type of thread in magic shops, but you don't really need to. If you purchase some sewing thread known as "Wooly Nylon," in the color black, it's the same thing.

The "Hookups"

There are two very popular ways to connect your thread to the object you're levitating. Both use cellophane tape rolled into a ball at one end. This ball goes into your mouth, between your cheek and your gum. It's not as gross as it sounds, and you can still talk.

The first way to hook your thread up is to tape or tie it directly to the object. This works very well for objects made of anything other than paper. For paper objects, another method works better.

Hook the "non-mouth" end of your thread to another object. A wall, a table, a deck of cards... or even another person! That way, you can wrap your bill (or whatever) around the thread, and make the object float that way.

Once your object is floating, you can form your fingers into a hoop that you move around the object in such a way as to effectively dodge the thread. Best of luck with your levitation magic tricks.

Awesome Magic Tricks For Starters

To start these awesome magic tricks off, let's look at this simple card trick then move onto some more difficult but awesome magic tricks. The card trick is called "Balance a playing card on the Back of Your Hand."

The effect's secret is the use of a thumb tip which every magician should own. How this trick is suppose to look like. The card is to spin off the deck's top and levitate between the hands. It can even float around the body of the magician.

Afterwards the audience can look at the card to see if it is completely normal. For this trick, you are going to need the cards and some invisible thread. This is easy to pick up at the nearest magic shop.

You need to first start with attaching the invisible thread using some clear tape or wax. Measure out the thread so that it is roughly the length of your earlobe to groin. Then it is just a matter of sticking an end of the thread to the back of the earlobe and allowing the thread hang down the front.

Then attach the free end to your wrist or thumb nail's back. This should be where you can easily access the thread when needed.

Now you are ready. Hand the deck to audience to look at and shuffle. When the cards are handed back, discreetly press the top card's middle to the end of the invisible thread. The best cards to use for this trick are Bicycle. Why? Because these cards have a small circle in the exact middle.

Now to do the trick, you just need to do is do a spin throw. The thread will make the illusion of that the card is levitating. To do the spin throw hold the cards from above. Offset slightly the card that the attached thread is on. Keep your flexed index finger on the left top "corner of the card." Your thumb needs to be holding the left bottom corner of the same card.

Then flick the card. The flick is going to need practice. Once the flick is done quickly catch the invisible thread in between the index finger and the thumb of either hand. This is so that the card follows where ever the hand goes. You can even swap the invisible thread between hands to pass the card.

The next trick is the "Box Trick." This involves quite a bit of acting on your part, an assistant, and a box that has a fake bottom. The basic gist of the trick is to "allow the box to be" tilted forward and not reveal your assistant in the box.

The real trick is that when you go to tip the box forward, allowing the crowd to check to see if your assistant is inside the box. This is where the box has to slip over your assistant.

Your assistant has to tug the hinged base close and keep hold the grip all at once. This is so the crowd doesn't see him/her. This is why a good deal of diversionary acting is required. This is how your assistant is blocked from view of the audience.

This is what is called "stage magic." Most magicians performing for a crowd use a comedy routine to divert the audience's attention while your assistant gets into position. As you can see, you don't need a lot of props to perform these simple but awesome magic tricks [http://www.freemagicblog.com/some-awesome-magic-tricks].

These awesome magic tricks are sure to be crowd pleasers once you get the hang of doing them.

Pick a Card - A Magic Trick Over the Telephone

Telephone tricks baffle and delight because people do not expect them to work. Check out this baffling, outrageous telephone trick.

This trick resembles a typical 'pick a card' trick, except the magician and the spectator are separated by the telephone.

THE TRICK

I call a friend on the telephone and explain that I intend to do a magic trick over the telephone.

I ask her to shuffle and divide a deck into 2 equal piles, choose a card from one pile, note it, and place it on the bottom of the other pile; this is her Chosen card.

I ask her to slowly deal and call out the cards on the top of the pile that contains her Chosen card. She calls out the first card and I stop her, apologizing because I made a mistake; she must cut the deck first. She puts the card back on top. I request that she cut the deck completely.

I now ask her to slowly deal the cards from the bottom of the pile that contains her Chosen card, and to call out the cards as she turns them. She deals the entire pile and I ask her to do it again.

She starts over and I suddenly ask her to stop. I tell her the identity of her Chosen card and that is next to be turned. She turns over the next card, revealing her Chosen card.

PLEASE GUESS HOW YOU THINK YOU MIGHT ACCOMPLISH THIS CHICANERY? It may help if you answer the following questions about this particularly interesting trick: Why did I ask her to divide the deck? Did I really make a mistake when I asked her to deal and call out cards the first time? Why did I ask her to cut the pile? Why did I ask her to deal and call out the cards from the top? Why not deal from the bottom? How did I know the identity and location of her Chosen card?

Congratulate yourself if you generated a reasonable plan to do this trickery. The wizard thanks you. I did the trick this way.

THE SECRET

I first asked her to divide the deck, so we wouldn't have to wait while she called out all the cards in a full deck,

To do this telephone trick I needed a way to create a Key card on the telephone. By asking her to deal and call out cards from the top, and then pretending I made a mistake after she told me the identity of the top card of her pile, I made that card my Key card and wrote it down to not forget it.

The rest of this mechanical, self-working trick played out as described above. The first time she dealt the cards from the top of the pile, I listened for my Key card, and knew her Chosen card was the next card. I wrote down her Chosen card.

Then when she dealt again, I stopped her when she called out my Key card. I then told her the identity of her Chosen card and predicted it would appear next. It did.

This great telephone trick baffles, amazes, and delights. WOW.

MAGICAL PRINCIPLES TELEPHONE TRICKS

In my Family Magic books, I deal with the concept of card tricks so easy to do that the magician does not have to touch the cards. Instead, he hands the cards to a spectator-volunteer and coaches her to do the trick. The audience is truly impressed when I point out that 'I did not touch the cards."

Telephone tricks take the idea of 'the magician did not touch the cards' one step further; the magician not only does not touch the cards, he does not do the trick in the same room, city, state, or country as the spectator-volunteer.

In some regards, I find this idea decidedly eerie. Yet it works. This magic startles, astonishes, and entertains everyone. Adapt telephone tricks like this one to your computer: communicate using email, webmail, Skype, instant messenger, etc.

Card Trick Over the Phone - The Mentalist

Performing magic card trick with your friends or audiences in the same place is normal. But if I tell you that there are some card tricks that you can perform over the phone, will you believe me? Well, you might think that it's impossible. But actually, it is possible. Besides, it is so easy and even you can do it.

I have one magic trick which can be performed over the phone. It's called The Mentalist. You can present this at your next party.

Tell your audiences in the room that you have a friend who is probably the best mind reader in the world today. He reads thought waves, brain waves, and is an ESP expert. You wish he were here this evening, but you have his phone number and you would like to test him to see if he can use his telepathy long distance.

Then, you select one of the audience to be your spectator. After that, you spread the cards onto the table, face up and have your spectator select a card. You have seen this card along with everyone else in the room. Let us say, for example, that the chosen card was the Four of Diamonds.

You then say: "Let's all be quiet, and no one mention the Four of Diamonds. I'll call my friend and you can speak with him. When you get him, ask him to tell you what card we picked. I'll dial, it's an unlisted number."

Naturally the party you're going to call should know the trick. He can be a close friend or perhaps a member of your family. Dial the number and when he answers, you say: "May I speak to the Mentalist?"

This is the code and he knows that you are doing the trick. He will then begin to name the four suits slowly. As soon as he names the right one (Diamonds, in this case), you stop him by saying: "Hello Mentalist?"

He will now list the cards quickly, Ace, two, three, four..., you will interrupt as soon as he has named the correct card. "Hold on for a moment, please."

Hand the phone to the spectator in the room who has chosen the card. He will ask the Mentalist for the name of his card. Have your friend tell him the name but he should do it in stages, such as: "You have chosen a red-faced card. I believe it is a Diamond. A rather low card. Please concentrate. I think it is the Four of Diamonds. Thank you for calling."

He will hang up immediately. The shock is a good one, but under no circumstances offer to repeat this card trick. And do not disclose the number you dialed.

Can You Really Learn Magic Tricks From YouTube Videos?

With tens of thousands of magic tutorial videos on YouTube, this article will help you sort through the endless amateur videos and learn professional magic tricks and effects from some of magic's newest innovators.

No one can deny the influence YouTube has had on the internet. With over 800 million unique users a month and roughly 60 hours of video uploaded each minute, YouTube utilizes as much bandwidth each year as the rest of the internet combined. If one goes searching, you'll find videos on virtually everything imaginable and tutorials on tens of thousands of different subjects - magic not being the least of them.

Because of the secrecy surrounding magic and the practice and performance of magic tricks, videos on YouTube attempting to disclose these secrets are endless. Search for 'easy magic tricks' or 'magic trick tutorials' and the results will number in the tens of thousands. Unfortunately, quantity far exceeds the actual quality. The number of young and/or inexperienced video posters probably outnumber the good ones at least fifty to one.

This brings us back to our original question.. can you actually learn magic from YouTube?

First, I'm not going to get in to the moral and philosophical question of whether or not one should publish magic tutorials on YouTube. The videos are there.. and they are NOT going away. Second, many of the videos demonstrate effects and variations of effects and techniques that are readily available in classic magic publications and obtainable by anyone with a library card or a credit card and internet access. I'm not going to get in to copyrighted vs. public domain either. If a tutorial is of copyrighted material, then the copyright holder can request the material (video) be removed.

That said, lets assume the videos we're talking about are legal and/or original.

Personally, I have discovered several magic channels on YouTube that regularly publish outstanding tutorials. If you want to learn card magic, card tricks, and both mental and mathematical magic card tricks, you can learn enough impressive magic to keep you busy for months. Same for magic with paper, silks, matches, dice, balloons, birds, coins, magnets, glass bottles and a host of other forms of magic.

There are also categories of magic ideal of street magic, parlour magic, and walk around magic. Exploration of YouTube will disclose tricks and effects you'll not find in print.

As diverse as the subject matter, YouTube's one big drawback is the time limit. Since most videos are limited to ten minutes or less, all the nuances and fine points that make an effect magical are usually missing. This is the argument for magic books, extended DVDs, and mentoring. Some things simply cannot be taught in a matter of minutes.

Although I am a fan of methods of learning that offer me the greatest chance of success, I can't ignore YouTube. There is simply too much material, too much original thinking and ideas, and too many video tutorials for me to choose to pass on this endless pool of resources.

If you want to discover the best YouTube has to offer, search for 'magic trick tutorials', and 'card trick tutorials'. Also, Google search for 'best YouTube magic trick channels'.
